This Giving December we are highlighting charities that are near and dear to the Liweli team. My name is Joanna and I’m the social media gal for Liweli. (Go follow @liweli_wellness if you aren’t already!!) I’m choosing to highlight the organization Strong Women, Strong Girls. Their mission is to empower girls to imagine a broader future through a curriculum grounded on female role models. Strong female role models have played a huge role in my personal story and an organization centered around providing these mentorship roles to young girls, is something younger me would have only dreamt about.
In college, I was a Gender and Sexuality Studies major (shoutout Stonehill College). I spent four years learning, researching, and working towards understanding the complexities of gender inequality and I couldn’t have done it without powerful female role models. My professors constantly pushed me to work harder, my friends constantly told me to work less, and my family always supported me. I know the power of female role models because my life has been shaped by them. And that’s a privilege and an experience I never take for granted.
Strong Women, Strong Girls works to counter the social pressures that discourage girls in under-resourced communities by combining multi-generational group mentoring to build a community of strength around every girl. Combining the powers of girls, college women, and professional women to each work together to help the next. They say it takes a village and Strong Women, Strong Girls wants to make sure no one goes without it.
